'The Guest' offers an unexpected dose of entertainment reminiscent of 1980s horror films. The film’s pulsing music and rapid editing choices work well with its overall style. Those who aren’t fans of the movie’s sentimental qualities and nostalgic feel might find some of the more intense displays of violence and blood a little odd. The story is fairly simple, centering on Dan Stevens as an ex-military man visiting his friend's family at their home to fulfill a final request. He offers them assistance with personal issues, but things aren’t quite as they appear. The movie does stumble somewhat near the conclusion when it attempts to forcefully underscore its deliberately outrageous nature, even though it had previously been succeeding in doing so in a more understated way. Dan Stevens delivers a strong performance. Initially, the previews suggested similarities to Nicolas Winding Refn's 'Drive,' but Stevens brings his character a distinctive sense of detachment and strength. ★★★½
