Kevin Costner portrays “Randall,” a coast guard rescue swimmer who finds himself reassigned to train new recruits following a problematic save. He’s understandably hesitant about molding these newcomers, and predictably, one of them – “Jake” (Ashton Kutcher), a confident swimming champion – becomes his particular focus. The problem is that the storyline feels entirely familiar; you can anticipate exactly how their interactions will unfold. While the conclusion takes a slightly unexpected turn, most of the film just feels predictable. They both carry personal struggles and possess an unwavering resolve to succeed, as one might expect. Kutcher’s appearance is pleasant enough when he's wet, and the movie does offer some glimpse into the demanding nature of US Coast Guard training; however, ultimately it comes across as a fairly forgettable production.
