It made me question how much performance was really involved from Brendan Gleeson! He seems to be having a good time as the unconventional Garda officer "Boyle," whose quiet Irish town gets caught up in an FBI probe spearheaded by "Everett" (Don Cheadle) concerning a smuggling operation potentially involving $500m of cocaine. It's safe to say that "Boyle" operates according to his own rules, isn’t concerned with authority, and finds the appearance of this American officer who follows procedure quite irritating. Before long, we are pursuing the criminal group, and while their connection does follow a rather expected course, their conversations contain some sharp and wry humor, and the investigative process highlights, in a fairly ingenious way, the contrasts and merits of their policing approaches. We’re aware from the start who the antagonists are, and Mark Strong and Liam Cunningham do a decent job portraying them as believing that the local people will not be an obstacle to their illegal business. The resolution felt somewhat underwhelming, but overall, the film progresses at a brisk pace and is diverting, with Gleeson and Cheadle’s contrasting personalities presented effectively while steering clear of harmful stereotypes.
