The earlier installments were criticized for following a predictable pattern: someone enters a location, experiences disturbing visions, and then meets an untimely end. It's curious that this formula didn't draw more criticism previously. Nicolas Pesce made an effort to introduce something fresh while still adhering to the established conventions of *The Grudge*. The individual narratives aren’t designed to weave together in a traditional dramatic fashion; instead, they are linked by shared themes, similar to how an anthology series functions. These stories illustrate how the curse exploits vulnerabilities, mirroring people's tendency to avoid dealing with difficult emotions or past trauma. It touches on topics such as parental exhaustion, denial of mental health concerns—both one’s own and those of others—and a general unwillingness to confront problems directly. Even if the narrative doesn’t resonate, it’s hard to dismiss the film's impressive atmosphere, visuals, and sound. I share the sentiment that the non-linear timeline felt peculiar, but that decision likely resulted from studio meddling. I am optimistic that this film will eventually receive a more considered assessment.
