This adaptation of *’The Grinch’* feels geared toward a younger audience. I enjoyed it overall. There are some problems, but for the most part, it gets things right; it’s clearly intended for families, and it makes sense to animate this Dr. Seuss story. However, I wasn't impressed with Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch. I don't believe his voice is a good fit—the character needed someone who sounds more threatening and sinister. I didn't get a sense of any real darkness or unpleasantness in him, aside from his obvious actions, although that might be appropriate for the family-friendly tone they were going for. Aside from Cumberbatch’s performance, Pharrell Williams’ narration was great, and it was nice to hear Angela Lansbury in a small part. The plot of this 2018 film is well done, but what really stood out to me was the humor—I consistently found it funny; there are some genuinely amusing jokes throughout. It's a film I’ll remember fondly, even though it could have been better, particularly if they had cast someone else in the lead. When I think about this movie and the 2000 version, I actually prefer this one—it was a close call; Jim Carrey is excellent in that film, but this one has much improved pacing.
