It's true that this movie isn’t groundbreaking; it borrows from familiar territory and occasionally feels predictable. Still, its strengths lie in how well it works and its dedication to presenting solutions that feel believable or at least practical. This weekend was all about Alaska for me, as I watched two films set in the state. But this one easily stood out—it has a compelling narrative and Liam Neeson delivers an exceptional dramatic performance. Joe Carnahan’s film is a successful survival thriller when you consider what it offers compared to the many mediocre movies in that category. It lacks originality, which is increasingly common these days, but its effectiveness is already something to appreciate. The story begins strongly, introducing us to characters who aren't particularly likable or deserving of our sympathy—they’re much like mercenaries—and establishing a sense of danger through a plane crash. Only a few people survive this incident and quickly realize they are near a pack of dangerous wolves. Beyond the palpable tension and feeling of peril that keep you engaged, Liam Neeson is excellent in another strong performance. He's reliable for roles as tough characters or anti-heroes, with an impressive history, so expectations were high—and he met them. I did feel, however, that the rest of the actors couldn’t quite match his level and it seems obvious that some character deaths are so foolish they become hard to accept. The film boasts good production values, making extensive use of beautiful snowy landscapes which is typical for movies set in Alaska. It's worth noting that much of the filming occurred on location rather than in a studio, meaning the cast and crew genuinely experienced the harsh cold that the movie conveys. The sets are well-done and the special effects contribute to a visually appealing film overall.
