I'm quite surprised by the high ratings some people on IMDb have given this movie; several gave it 8, 9, or even a full 10 stars. It’s certainly not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, but it doesn’t deserve that level of praise. The one bright spot is Liam Neeson's performance—he does well with the material he was given. He’s really the only reason I gave it a rating as high as 4 stars on IMDb. Everything else about the film just feels off. My initial thought was, wow, this director seems to love film grain! It’s subjective, of course, but I don't appreciate when movies are artificially made to look like they were shot on old and low-quality stock. There are times it can work well, but here it doesn’t add anything positive. The movie begins with a plane crash that isn't handled effectively—neither the special effects nor the depiction of reality is convincing. Unfortunately, the lack of realism continues throughout. The wolves act in ways that are completely unnatural and unbelievable. I might accept this if it were a horror film or some kind of fantasy, but it’s not intended to be either. The actual wolf footage isn't particularly impressive either. Then there's this character who is supposedly an experienced hunter and “wolf expert.” Leaving the crash site was a questionable choice at best. And then we have people jumping off cliffs with a weak homemade rope instead of simply walking around, not to mention accidentally firing ammunition by poking sticks at it—what on earth? Also, he clearly knows nothing about wolves or any other wild animals. To top off this unpleasant experience, the film concludes with a truly terrible ending.
