Nathan on The Green Knight

8/10 · Jul 17, 2022

_The Green Knight_ functions as a detailed exploration of a man’s journey toward self-respect, though this deliberate pace ultimately proves to be its weakness. I found myself very engaged initially; the opening half hour held my attention completely. However, that momentum gradually diminishes in the middle portion. The scenes then start to feel stretched out, and the narrative shifts so abruptly from one setting to another that it becomes confusing to follow. Despite these problems with the rhythm, the film remains a pleasure to view. The visuals and atmosphere are exceptionally well-executed; each scene felt meticulously designed. The combination of computer-generated imagery and practical effects is a definite highlight, especially given how many movies today depend too heavily on digital techniques. I was completely drawn in by the tone, as the unfolding adventure takes some unsettling turns where our central character must endure hardship to reach his goal. This determination shapes him as a person and allows him to prove himself deserving of knighthood. I believed in this transformation because Dev Patel delivers a truly remarkable performance. Patel perfectly embodies Gawain's personality—a young, irresponsible individual who has yet to accomplish anything significant. This leads to considerable self-doubt, as he feels inadequate even around his uncle, the king, despite his royal lineage. Patel conveys this uncertainty throughout the film with great skill, and it’s not until the conclusion that he finally demonstrates his worthiness. His acting is outstanding, and Dev Patel deserves all possible recognition for his work in this film. Ultimately, _The Green Knight_ was a compelling experience. While its length feels excessive and the pacing could have been improved, it remains an excellent movie that I appreciated. The more I learn about it and consider it after viewing, the more rewarding it becomes, thanks to the intricate symbolism and presentation that isn't immediately apparent. **Grade:** _83%_ **Verdict:** _Great_
