I can't say for sure whether he’s evil or not. Sergio Corbucci directed The Great Silence, sharing screenplay duties with Mario Amendola, Bruno Corbucci and Vittoriano Petrilli. The cast includes Jean-Louis Trintignant, Klaus Kinski, Frank Wolff, Luigi Pistilli, Vonetta McGee and Mario Brega. Ennio Morricone composed the music, and Silvano Ippoliti was in charge of cinematography. The story unfolds in Snowhill, Utah, near the turn of the century, where local people have turned to theft simply to stay alive. This has resulted in rewards being offered for their capture, attracting bounty hunters who operate outside any legal framework. They are confronted by a silent gunfighter known only as Silence, who harbors a strong dislike for those who hunt for money. Considered a cult favorite and widely enjoyed among Spaghetti Western enthusiasts, The Great Silence is just as bleak and frigid as the snowy environment in which it’s set. Death has become something to be bought and sold; avarice and dishonesty are widespread, and the distinction between good and bad is difficult to discern. The film's violent moments have a powerful impact, especially the final scene that ends with a sudden, jarring conclusion. The visuals beautifully depict the winter scenery and complement the story’s progression, while Morricone provides an otherworldly musical backdrop. The movie does contain some oddities like a deceased character blinking and restraints vanishing without explanation, and not every performance matches the quality of Kinski's or Wolff’s work, but it remains a truly remarkable Spaghetti Western experience. Its standing within that genre is certainly justified. 8/10
