"Ratigan," drawing from the Moriarty archetype, is a rather unpleasant film! The plot centers around his abduction of a toymaker, with the goal of creating a toy reflecting this evil mastermind’s potential for global control. Predictably, this draws in the capable detective duo Basil and Dawson, who, much like Holmes and Watson, must meticulously investigate every aspect and pursue each lead to locate and stop their opponent. I found myself enjoying it quite a bit. It builds an atmosphere of threatening trickery effectively within seventy-five minutes, featuring clever writing and providing clues for viewers as the fate of "Mousedom" hangs in the balance. The Victorian setting allows the animators to take advantage of the clothing styles, the inquisitive scientific spirit of that era, and the overall feeling of Empire, morality, and faithfulness. The tense final scene at Big Ben concludes a pleasant adventure film that prioritizes character development and narrative over constant visual effects and computer-generated imagery – and it's genuinely entertaining!
