With their children away for the weekend, the “Earl and Countess of Ryhall” – portrayed by Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr – anticipate some much-needed downtime at their grand estate. However, their privacy is limited since they’ve had to open the grounds to public tours for a small fee. One visitor disregards the regulations, stepping past a "private" sign and directly into her sitting room. He's revealed to be an American millionaire named “Delacro” (Robert Mitchum), and he possesses considerable charm. This charm proves quite persuasive, and while her husband’s return initially dampens the situation, she soon finds herself in London under the guise of visiting her hairdresser and reconnecting with a quirky friend, "Hattie" (Jean Simmons). However, it becomes clear that something else is going on. Her husband isn't willing to let their marriage end easily, so he invites this man back for a visit, leading to a refined competition as both men attempt to win the Countess’s favor while the playful “Hattie” engages in her own schemes. The narrative explores the differences between established wealth and new money but ultimately centers on themes of genuine fondness and integrity. While the storyline lacks surprising twists or turns, watching these four characters interact highlights what true elegance and star power represent. Even Mitchum maintains a lightheartedness throughout, and Moray Watson delivers an entertaining performance as the aspiring writer-turned-butler who observes the unfolding events with a sympathetic yet slightly puzzled expression. The film’s title is fitting, and it's definitely worth seeing.
