Dustin Hoffman delivers a strong performance as "Ben," the easily influenced twenty-one year old who becomes entangled with the woman famously portrayed in a Simon & Garfunkel song. “Mrs. Robinson” (Anne Bancroft) is married to the spouse of his father’s business associate. She embodies sex appeal, allure, and sophistication—while he's simply young, inexperienced, and driven by desire. Their encounters unfold relatively smoothly, but concurrently, his family attempts to set him up with her daughter, “Elaine” (Katharine Ross). The story becomes increasingly complicated as "Ben" experiences growing internal conflict; who will he select? What choice is he even permitted to make? Can their secret remain concealed? I believe what allows this polished film from Mike Nichols to stay pertinent decades later is its capacity to reveal the fundamental, instinctive craving for intimacy, affection, and “something more”—without resorting to explicit depictions. It illustrates how characters develop into more complete, nuanced, and less immediate individuals—and Hoffman embodies that progression flawlessly. Bancroft is simply superb; she transitions seamlessly from glamorous wife and mother to seductive figure and back again with a distinctive flair and elegance that’s both threatening and captivating. You sense that the dynamic, the power balance and reliance between them will inevitably shift—it must—but how? At what expense – in terms of emotional or personal repercussions? The film's production quality is outstanding, the writing sharp, and the connection between the initially awkward Hoffman and Bancroft is undeniable. A memorable soundtrack certainly enhances the experience as well, and seeing it on a large screen would be worthwhile.
