While "The Gorge" doesn’t reinvent its particular combination of styles, it distinguishes itself through its visual flair, inventive monster appearances, and the appealing connection between the main characters. Scott Derrickson demonstrates his ability to merge action sequences, a sense of anticipation, and emotional depth, delivering a very watchable movie made for the home that, even though some of its most interesting story ideas aren’t explored fully, manages to hold viewers' attention throughout. Ultimately, what makes it work is the compelling acting, carefully managed suspense, and how it turns a straightforward concept into something visually impressive. Rating: B+
