It’s easy to look back at childhood adventure movies with a warm feeling. The story centers around Mikey Walsh, Brand Walsh, and their companions who embark on a quest for pirate treasure—believed to be real after they find an old map—in hopes of preventing the Walsh family from being forced to relocate due to developers. It’s packed with excitement: treasure, pirates, traps, criminals, unusual people living in a basement, water slides, wells that grant wishes, and early romantic feelings. Richard Donner directed The Goonies, which Steven Spielberg and Christopher Columbus wrote, and it's an uncommon film that manages to entertain both kids and adults alike. The movie moves quickly and doesn’t slow down, pulling the audience along with its momentum. The production values are high—the sets are really nice—and most of the actors are enjoyable to watch. There are a few small issues, like the female characters being somewhat stereotypical in their roles, but these don't matter much if you’re drawn into the film’s imaginative qualities from the start. It’s the kind of movie that hopefully remains beloved well beyond childhood. It brings to mind junior version of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, though it isn’t quite the same, and is still a completely enjoyable action adventure that continues to resonate with many people who view it through a nostalgic lens. 8/10
