Even though I feel like I’m from a different generation than the intended audience, I ended up liking this film quite a bit. The basic storyline is familiar: a gentle dinosaur called "Arlo" finds himself swept away after an encounter with a little boy he calls "Spot." Both are trying to get back where they belong, but a group of pterodactyls sees them as easy prey. Initially hesitant, the pair come to understand that their odds of survival increase if they cooperate and embark on several adventures to return home. It doesn't break any new ground, certainly, however, the two main characters—particularly the boy—are entertaining to watch as they show how helpful cooperation, fondness, and all those standard lessons found in family movies can be. Thankfully, it avoids excessive sappiness for the most part, and there are some amusing moments with the threatening, albeit rather clumsy, pterodactyls who make things difficult for them. The visuals are large-scale and vibrant—though occasionally they feel a little flat, and the narrative moves smoothly through ninety minutes that will likely fade from memory quickly, but it’s an enjoyable and uncomplicated experience.
