Javier Bardem provides genuine amusement in this comedy drama. He portrays "Blanco," who runs a scale manufacturing company and eagerly anticipates receiving a local civic award—so much so that he’s already set aside space for the trophy. His situation is complicated by his operations manager, “Miralles” (Manolo Solo), his close friend at work, whose marital problems lead to frequent order errors within the factory. Adding to the pressure, a former employee named "Jose" (Óscar de la Fuente) is staging a protest outside the building on an empty lot. And then there's "Blanco’s" tendency to be unfaithful—the latest focus of his attention being intern “Liliana” (Almudena Amor). The central question becomes whether he can maintain control long enough to secure the award he desires. It doesn’t elicit boisterous laughter, but the way the various issues unfold and connect creates a genuinely pleasant viewing experience. A capable supporting cast assists Bardem in delivering a sharp, sarcastic, and subtly humorous depiction of how many family businesses likely operate—a sort of gentle form of inflated self-importance. Certain plot elements don’t quite succeed, especially as the story progresses, and it feels somewhat overlong by about fifteen minutes; however, overall this is an enjoyable film featuring performers and a director at their best.
