The negative reaction from critics seems unwarranted, in my opinion. Ansel Elgort, Jeffrey Wright, and Nicole Kidman deliver solid performances within a story centered on the repercussions of a devastating event and a single point in time. The characters undergo noticeable development as the film progresses, and the narrative unfolds at an engaging pace. It does feel somewhat extended; trimming some material from the original, rather extensive, novel might have been beneficial. Nevertheless, the script remains faithful to the book's core elements, making it worthwhile to see.
