I initially questioned Screen Australia's decision to fund a film centered around porridge production in the Scottish Highlands, but the introduction of a Sydney resident—along with people from Canada, England, Holland, and Zimbabwe—who have all made their way to Carrbridge in the Cairngorms helps clarify things. It turns out that for the past thirty years, Charlie Miller has been organizing the World Porridge Making Championships annually in this village. Having left his previous job, he now supports his organization by crafting spurtles, including a golden one given as the top award. Participants must adhere to identical guidelines and are allotted thirty minutes to create their ideal porridge. The traditional Scottish method involves water—though I personally always use milk—and some people add sea salt; however, the three judges on hand have a precise idea of what qualities they’re seeking when it comes to awarding the unique trophy: color, texture, and flavor. Beyond understanding the distinction between pinhead oats and regular ones, we also get to know this charming man and his vibrant, unusual community situated among the hills, not far from the Spey—the water source for many of Scotland's well-known malt whiskies. The documentary provides a glimpse behind the scenes as they set up the tent, decorate the village hall, and even iron the flags that will hang on the walls before the main event (and an unexpected storm). It’s a straightforward narrative that depends on warm, insightful, and humorous comments from locals, competitors, and Miller himself, who plans to retire due to health concerns following this 2023 competition. I'm not convinced about adding honey, but I enjoy cinnamon in mine—and I even correctly predicted the winner!
