The film’s excessive length is a drawback, but perhaps the lack of a prominent star allows the narrative to gain traction, and the storyline itself isn't bad. It presents a familiar scenario—a love triangle—featuring soldiers Harrod (played by Tom Tryon) and Rogers (Harve Presnell), both competing for the attention of Lou (Senta Berger). She appears quite skilled at maintaining her interest in both men simultaneously. The film improves considerably once it moves beyond the somewhat tedious romantic aspects, as the action picks up when the two soldiers must set aside their personal feelings and confront the threat posed by the Sioux warriors. We then see a fair amount of yelling and tomahawk throwing during the conflict between the army and the Native Americans. It becomes visually engaging and enjoyable once it gains momentum; while not particularly innovative, it's still a well-made and beautifully shot western that could be quite good if trimmed—eliminating almost all of the romantic subplot would certainly help—and focused more on a cavalry narrative.
