I’m drawn to this kind of movie, and knowing Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep were involved, I anticipated something better. They both give excellent performances; it’s simply that they aren’t featured enough within the film itself. There's a sequence later on where Streep and Bridges discuss whether having free will is worth enduring the associated suffering. It runs for about ten minutes and showcases some truly impressive acting that everyone should experience. However, this scene appears relatively late in the movie and isn’t sufficient to compensate for the preceding hundred minutes of utter monotony. The film lacks any real feeling of suspense or anxiety. There's a noticeable absence of dramatic momentum, leaving it with the feel of a low-key documentary playing out on screen. I almost want to fault the younger cast members for failing to engage the audience, but that doesn’t seem entirely reasonable. The movie uses the voice of the central character, Jonas, as narration. While this provides a swift way to establish the film's tone, it also diminishes any potential drama. Because he is recounting events, we already know the narrator ‘survives,’ which removes some of the stakes. Numerous themes—free will, fate, happiness, conflict, optimism, emotion versus logic—are essentially ignored because the narrator seems more concerned with simply getting through the story than with fully immersing us in it. Consequently, there’s no initial build-up to create an emotional connection with any of the characters.
