There are two main reasons people might react negatively to this film; it’s definitely experimental in nature, and Sasha Grey has a background in adult films. She was really well-known in the adult industry—Rolling Stone even wrote an article about her. But she's capable of acting. She’s not Marlon Brando, but she performs adequately enough that I didn’t dislike her work; I actually found some things to appreciate. With a little more refinement, she could develop real potential, beyond the notoriety associated with Rolling Stone's "Dirtiest Woman on Earth" and the label of “Soderbergh's Experimental Crap.” It seems harsh to punish someone for attempting something different. I get bored assembling small pottery pieces and trying to guess their age based on markings. Sometimes I wish I had an old chamber pot or two just to mix things up a bit. I’m certain Hollywood feels the same way, and when you try something new, it's bound to be either a success or a failure. But I've reached a point in my life where "The Girlfriend Experience" seems more appealing than another “Ocean’s” movie—and honestly, if it turns out badly, at least I didn’t waste money seeing the same tired story again. In this instance, he missed the mark somewhat, but it is 2009, and there aren't many exciting options available in theaters these days. Do I want to see more alien or robot action movies? Do I want to watch a remake? Or would I rather just stay home and rewatch "Dog Day Afternoon"? Oh, wait, Soderbergh has something that stands apart from the usual fare—it’s worth giving it a try.
