Wuchak on The Ghoul

7/10 · Mar 26, 2020

What secrets are hidden within the misty marshes near Land’s End in England? During the 1920s, a pair on their way to Land’s End, England, finds themselves without gasoline while enveloped in thick fog. It's then that the woman (Veronica Carlson) meets an unusual gardener (John Hurt) and encounters the estate of a former clergyman (Peter Cushing), who resides there along with his Indian servant and… something else. A second couple arrives searching for their missing friends (Ian McCulloch & Alexandra Bastedo). Chaos follows. “The Ghoul” (1975) combines elements of “Psycho” (1960), “The Shuttered Room” (1967), and Hammer’s "Demons of the Mind" (1972). It was produced by a company that existed for a brief time, drawing inspiration from Hammer films and employing many familiar people and locations. Consequently, it carries a distinct Hammer feel and is comparable to much of their horror work from the 1960s and 70s. Some have likened it to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1974), but this film is more subdued and focuses on disturbed individuals and an unsettling atmosphere that reflects the foggy marshes of Cornwall, England, and the disturbing secrets of India. The film’s length is approximately 1 hour, 28 minutes (though a shorter cut exists with several minutes removed), and filming took place at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, England, just outside London. GRADE: B
