Robert Donat, playing the younger Glourie, delivers a strong performance in this amusingly silly ghost story. The plot revolves around the son of a timid Scottish clan leader who is destined to linger as a spirit within his castle until a member of their rival clan, the McLaggen, publicly acknowledges that one Glourie is equivalent to fifty of them. This predicament began way back in 12th-century Scotland, leaving our hero increasingly disheartened by the prospect of finding—and getting a declaration from—a McLaggen before reaching the 20th century. However, fortune intervenes when his family’s castle is purchased and moved to Florida by wealthy businessman Joe Martin (played wonderfully by Eugene Pallette). Martin intends to capitalize on the castle's reputation for being haunted to boost his business ventures, which also draws other Scottish families of noble birth into the mix. Could he possibly find a way to break free? René Clair directs with a light touch, including brief appearances from Elsa Lanchester and Morton Selten as the original Glourie, who clearly valued his whisky more than fighting. The film is fanciful and captivating, mildly eerie (though not truly frightening), and delightful, boasting a script that skillfully incorporates Scottish history and humor.
