I really enjoyed seeing this film when it initially came out. Drawing from a factual account—with the exception of the lions’ den sequence, which was fabricated—the film vividly portrays Africa thanks to Vilmos Zsigmond's stunning visuals. The depiction of Africa onscreen is as vibrant and impressive as experiencing it firsthand. There’s no computer-generated imagery; instead, real, trained lions and practical effects are used. The story unfolds during the period when Europe was colonizing Africa, centering on the British effort to finish a railway bridge over a river. This construction is made difficult by two lions that appear to hunt for sport rather than sustenance. Even after 25 years since its release, I still find myself captivated by this movie. Even with familiarity of the storyline, I still feel anxious and hold my breath during the most intense moments—the suspense in those scenes is truly remarkable. The main actors all deliver solid performances; however, Michael Douglas particularly shines, embodying a rugged big-game hunter combined with the heroic persona he established in films from the 1980s like Romancing the Stone. One area where the film doesn’t quite measure up is Goldsmith's score, which feels disappointing and suggests lost potential—it lacks memorable musical themes or any real sense of adventure or connection to Africa. However, beyond that minor flaw, this is a wonderful movie exploring an extraordinary story set in a relatively obscure region of the vast African continent. The narrative lingers in your thoughts, similar to how Africa itself remains with you. I love this film.
