CinemaSerf on The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

It's hard to deny Rex Harrison’s effort in this one; he nearly shouts "thar she blows" while giving a cheerfully pompous portrayal of himself as a ghost! The story centers on “Mrs. Muir,” also called “Lucia” (Gene Tierney), and her daughter, who find themselves needing a change of scenery after the death of Mrs. Muir’s husband and an unpleasant relationship with his family, so they relocate to the coast. Ignoring some cautions from the realtor, she finds a house that's clearly inhabited by someone other than the living. Almost immediately, “Capt. Gregg” appears and makes it clear he isn’t happy about their arrival. He wasn’t planning on sharing his home with retired sailors, and he’s also upset that people believe he took his own life instead of experiencing a mishap involving his heating system. Following plenty of amusingly sharp and nautical exchanges between them, it becomes apparent that they're equally matched and an unusual romantic connection seems likely. Or is it? A potential complication arises with the presence of married writer “Fairley” (George Sanders), who’s interested in the widow, but what are his chances against a grumpy ghost? The film also benefits from the good naturedness of housekeeper “Martha” (Edna Best), and together they create a well-balanced and genuinely amusing contest—a clash of minds, genders, and stubborn personalities. It occasionally drifts into sentimentality, although not frequently enough to diminish the charm of these three playful characters. While it doesn't quite reach the level of "Blithe Spirit" (1948), it’s a very close comparison.
