The promotional materials suggested a film centered on a Polish mobster, but what we get is something entirely different: a story about Ann (Dale Dickey), a grumpy character with a fondness for vodka. Her granddaughter Emma (Romane Denis) seems to be the only person who shows any concern for her as she navigates life alongside her disabled husband Chip. One night while they’re sleeping, intruders arrive armed with a court order establishing a legal guardianship—essentially declaring them incapable of managing their own lives and placing someone else in charge. The couple had no knowledge of these proceedings, which were orchestrated by a questionable doctor working for Rivera (Bruce Ramsay), who was after their condo and savings. Now confined to a new apartment, Ann is resolved to escape, particularly given that their caretakers are prone to using force to extract every last dollar from them. Rivera fails to anticipate that Ann has experience looking out for herself. What unfolds afterward feels somewhat formulaic, although Dickey appears to be enjoying portraying this tough character; the core of the narrative lies in its shocking premise: certain US states permit individuals to be abruptly removed from their homes and stripped of their assets by unknown parties motivated by avarice and bribery. It's a film worth seeing, though watching it on television would suffice.
