Vance (Barbara Stanwyck) grew up alongside two brothers on the Furies, a vast New Mexican cattle ranch belonging to her father, T.C. (Walter Huston). It seems he intends for her to take over his position, but things aren't going to be easy. He’s facing financial difficulties, with a mortgage payment due and 20,000 head of cattle needing to be gathered and sold – he certainly has plenty to keep him occupied. There are also squatters on their land, and one of them, Herrera (Gilbert Roland), is a long-time friend and admirer of Vance. Then there’s the disgruntled Darrow (Wendell Carey), who's set on reclaiming what he believes T.C. unfairly took from him; he hopes to manipulate Vance and her father for financial gain, or at least a substantial payment. Vance becomes aware of their money problems and worries when Flo (Judith Anderson), an older woman with obvious designs on wealth, reappears and resumes a relationship with her father – a connection she knows will only create further complications. This is all made worse by a tragic event that creates significant tension between the father and daughter. Can you follow along? Stanwyck delivers a spirited performance and commands attention alongside Huston, the obviously manipulative Anderson, and a supporting ensemble that keeps the story engaging. It's more of a strategic Western than one filled with gunfights; it focuses on character development and plotting, and any romantic elements are as devoid of sentimentality as possible – even the kissing seems purely obligatory. This is another strong illustration of the genre evolving beyond its earlier roughness toward a more refined approach, and it’s definitely worth seeing.
