I’d never anticipated hearing anything about The Full Monty! When The Chippendales, a male strip show troupe, arrive in Sheffield and local women flock to see them, Gaz and his friends—all out of work—get an idea for earning some money. They decide to put on their own one-time performance where they’ll strip onstage, with the distinction being that these guys will go all the way: completely naked dancing! The Full Monty is a very charming comedy; the setup is ridiculous, naturally, but within all the silliness and absurdity there's a surprisingly smart and relatable story about personal connections. Despite what some American critics have suggested over time, the movie is full of genuinely funny jokes—it’s just that maybe people unfamiliar with British humor aren’t getting them. For example, during the well-known dole queue dancing scene, notice the man standing behind Tom Wilkinson, who, after watching Wilkinson do his Fred Astaire impression, simply puffs out his cheeks and continues waiting! It's small details like that which reveal a lot about the differences between British and American comedy styles. As I mentioned earlier, The Full Monty isn’t just a film about unattractive men performing a striptease. We see a group of men each pursuing something in their lives—whether it's dealing with family issues or exploring their sexuality—and they are given opportunities to address sensitive emotional topics and reclaim some self-respect. If I had to offer one criticism, it would be that the female characters could have been more developed, but ultimately this story is really about these men. With a catchy soundtrack and featuring strong performances from everyone involved, The Full Monty is a thoroughly enjoyable film that gets better with each viewing. So pay close attention for visual jokes you might have overlooked previously. 8/10
