Val’s weary of his existence, prompting him to hock a guitar—a cherished gift from blues legend Lead Belly. The film begins with Val in court facing an unimpressed judge, who lets him go after he pledges to leave town. His car breaks down during a storm, forcing him to push it toward the only lit building around: the local jail. There, he connects with the sheriff’s wife, a woman enduring abuse at the hands of her husband. She isn't thrilled about Val’s presence in her home or the jail. The kindhearted wife then introduces Val to the general store owner and offers him employment while the husband is hospitalized. Despite his reservations, Val accepts. A romance develops between them, which significantly raises the film's intensity. This movie is a real find and ranks among Marlon’s finest performances. It's based on a Tennessee Williams narrative, with Joanne Woodward delivering an outstanding portrayal of a relaxed and flirtatious woman.
