Rando on The Frozen Ground

7/10 · Mar 23, 2021

I checked this one out because it was suggested on a podcast I enjoy, which had an episode detailing Robert Hansen and his victims. Seeing the film after hearing that story highlights all the details they left out and just how awful his crimes were. It’s fairly typical of police procedurals—you know who committed the crime from the start, so the tension comes from watching them try to build a case. There's an impression that the local officers are initially protecting him. I thought it was a decent film; you don’t have to be completely focused to follow along with what’s happening. It would have been more impactful if they had spent more time on Cindy Paulson and her experiences, instead of centering on the detective's personal life, which didn't contribute much to the narrative. Even a deeper look at the officer himself would have worked, but we barely got any insight into his world—that brief glimpse felt unnecessary. Showing more of Hansen’s family would also have been valuable; the single scene we saw didn't really explain how he managed to keep such an enormous secret hidden. A better understanding of his wife and kids might have shed some light on that. The performances were all excellent. Nicolas Cage was at his finest, as were John Cusack and Vanessa Hudgens. Cusack’s portrayal shifted from quiet and hesitant to completely unhinged, which I thought he handled really well; he even resembled the real person who committed these acts. Vanessa Hudgens made me empathize with her character while also conveying her fear and circumstances effectively. It's a good movie overall, but not if you’re looking for something more than just an account of what happened. It doesn't delve very deeply into anything. And those who are easily upset by depictions of violence or sexual assault should probably skip it.
