Wuchak on The Frozen Ground

7/10 · Feb 27, 2018

"The Frozen Ground," which Scott Walker both wrote and directed, arrived in 2013 as a crime thriller drawing from the factual account of Robert Hansen, an Alaskan serial killer who committed rape, torture, and murder against several young women between 1971 and 1983. The film features Vanessa Hudgens portraying a seventeen-year-old sex worker who managed to escape Hansen, portrayed by John Cusack. Nicolas Cage takes on the role of the state trooper who develops a connection with her while investigating Hansen. The movie shares similarities with films like “Kiss the Girls,” “The Flock,” and “Hardcore.” Those who enjoy that style of crime thriller will likely find something to appreciate here. The Alaskan setting is consistently gloomy, yet visually striking and unsettling. Cusack stands out as an unremarkable killer, and Cage delivers a reliably solid performance. The story unfolds in 1983, a period when Anchorage was experiencing growth thanks to the pipeline project, which also fueled a thriving sex trade. The depiction of the city’s dark side during that era is effectively portrayed and believable. The film's length is 1 hour and 45 minutes, and it was filmed entirely on location in Alaska. It earns a grade of B.
