John Chard on The Frozen Dead

4/10 · Oct 18, 2014

This British science fiction film is completely bonkers, frequently terrible, but for those who appreciate older “B” movies with low budgets and a certain appeal, it has enough unusual qualities and personality to be worth watching. The story quickly reveals that a peculiar scientist intends to thaw out frozen Nazis so he can establish a new global system of control. Dana Andrews is the recognizable actor in the main part, delivering a questionable German accent, while Kathleen Breck stands out as someone who portrays a disembodied head; a person affected by the scientist’s strange schemes. The whole thing is absurd, and the fact that Andrews and his fellow actors are treating it with sincerity only adds to the humor. The special effects are inconsistent but consistently entertaining, especially in scenes featuring the frozen bodies, a display of moving limbs, and every moment involving Breck's head—particularly the genuinely unsettling conclusion. 2/10
