The Freshman manages to be both a comedy and a drama, with some knowing jokes directed at those who analyze movies. It's really nice to see Marlon Brando in a laid-back role, leaning into the idea of making fun of himself. The story centers on Matthew Broderick as Clark Kellogg, a student coming to New York City who unexpectedly finds employment for someone resembling Don Corleone! Andrew Bergman, who wrote and directed, makes jokes about organized crime using fast-paced situations and satirical dialogue—though the satire gets overused and becomes boring around the middle. Penelope Anne Miller and B.D. Wong have good supporting parts and do well in them; honestly, all of the casting choices are excellent, and the technical aspects are also very strong. Everything is handled nicely and moves along quickly, but it would have been better if there was less satire and more traditional character-based humor. 6/10
