It’s disappointing to observe that by 1981, Disney seemed to have exhausted its supply of truly exceptional stories suitable for animated films. This film is a fairly free retelling of Daniel Mannix's story about a fox cub named Tod, who experiences the heartbreaking death of his father due to human actions and then travels through the wilderness making friends with various creatures—among them a dog called Copper and an elderly woman—before finding himself hunted. Circumstances require him to reconnect with his now-adult hunting-dog companion in order to evade those chasing him with firearms. The animation doesn't have the same lively quality as the studio’s earlier, more carefully produced work, and I find the narrative and characters rather unremarkable. While it is visually appealing, and Mickey Rooney, Corey Feldman, Kurt Russell, and Jack Albertson’s pleasant voice acting (his last performance) all contribute positively, the period when these kinds of sweet fantasy adventures were at their peak has definitely passed.
