"Harry," portrayed by Heath Ledger, makes an unexpected decision and gives up his military position right before his unit is scheduled to deploy to North Africa. He believes his reasons are completely justifiable—wanting to remain with his recently engaged "Ethne" (Kate Hudson). However, nearly everyone else seems to view his actions as a sign of weakness, presenting him with the ultimate mark of disgrace: a white feather along with their regards. Only his friend "Jack" (Wes Bentley) shows any understanding; but when the soldiers depart, “Jack” finds himself completely isolated, even losing the support of his sweetheart. He’s not cowardly, though, and decides to follow his comrades secretly, and as events unfold, it becomes clear that this was a fortunate choice. I appreciated the 1939 adaptation of this story, and honestly, this remake isn't bad at all. It does feel drawn out and somewhat unfocused occasionally, and the supporting cast—mostly British actors—doesn’t significantly enhance the feeling of danger the soldiers encounter on their desert battlefield against the intimidating Dervishes closing in relentlessly. The action sequences are quite well-executed and there are many of them as his difficult journey comes to an end. It's essentially a showcase for a charming lead actor who seemed to be having a good time within the rigid Victorian military setting where excessive pride ultimately leads to downfall. If you’re into straightforward, adventure movies geared towards boys, this provides plenty of entertainment for a couple of hours filled with vibrant action.
