A military officer from Britain (played by John Clements) receives orders to join Kitchener’s forces, a group intending to retaliate for the loss of General Gordon in Sudan. He's very attached to his fiancée, June Duprez, and chooses family commitments over professional advancement as a result. This turns out to be an error; his sweetheart and three close friends (Ralph Richardson, Jack Allen & Donald Gray) view him as lacking courage and give him a white feather—a symbol of cowardice—and he loses the chance to marry the daughter of a retired general (C. Aubrey Smith). He resolves to secretly pursue his comrades into the desert, trailing them as they encounter dangers inherent in their mission, and experiencing those same difficulties himself. The Korda brothers have delivered another film featuring excellent acting and a vibrant, well-structured adventure about resolve and disloyalty, also carrying an undercurrent of melancholy. I would place this on par with Merian C. Cooper's 1929 adaptation. (And be sure to notice John Laurie as "The Khalifa"!)
