I felt like I’d been avoiding something – and it wasn't a pleasant sensation. This film provides the strongest adaptation of A.E.W. Mason’s book, delivering an exciting and heartfelt story about a soldier publicly labeled as a coward by those around him. After being given four feathers to symbolize his supposed lack of courage, Howard Faversham sets out to regain respect during the Mahdist War in 1895. Director Zoltan Korda really went all-out on this production, sparing no expense. 1939 was an exceptional year for movies, possibly the very best ever. Those who enjoy action and adventure were fortunate to have films like "Beau Geste," "Gunga Din," and "The Four Feathers" available. The latter is a high-quality film, a Technicolor display of bravery and traditional masculine values. Some modern viewers might find issue with the underlying imperialist themes, and certain portrayals reflect the attitudes of that era; however, considering the exceptional craftsmanship on display – especially in the climactic battle scenes – this represents classic filmmaking at its finest. It earns a rating of 9/10.
