A strange fog rolls into the California coastal town of Antonio Bay, occurring one hundred years after a ship went down with everyone aboard. Initially dismissed by the locals, unsettling events begin as people vanish. Is there a connection between the unusual fog and these occurrences? Researching the town's past reveals a dark secret: its origins lie in a deliberate act of cruelty – sinking a ship carrying lepers and gold. Could this be an instance of payback delivered through the mist? It falls to Jamie Lee Curtis ("Solley"), Adrianne Barbeau ("Stevie"), and Janet Leigh ("Kathy") to uncover the truth before whatever is lurking within the fog arrives. The familiar opening music, borrowed from John Houseman's "Dr. Machen," establishes a mood that suits this slowly unfolding horror film, which relies heavily on the audience’s own anxieties and imagination to create suspense, while also giving the predominantly female cast something beyond simply reacting with screams and cries in the face of danger. The atmosphere is thick with darkness, fog, unsettling lights, unreliable cars – all contributing to a feeling of isolation and loneliness. Director John Carpenter skillfully utilizes these elements, not only through his lighting and camera work but also through an effective musical score that amplifies the building tension. While the performances are serviceable, and Adrianne Barbeau seemed to have some difficulty, Carpenter maintains a focus on the straightforward nature of the threat; the characters have enough to do and say, and the film moves along at a brisk pace for nearly ninety minutes. This isn't a movie filled with sudden scares; instead, the unsettling effects build gradually, which I found quite impactful.
