Drawing inspiration from the experiences of a celebrated unit of young American aviators who fought alongside the French during World War I, this drama turns out to be somewhat underwhelming. James Franco portrays the central figure, "Rawlings," a likable character who seems to believe he’s above regulations, but like his fellow unconventional companions, possesses courage and skill in piloting their wooden biplanes into harm's way. At that time, a certain sense of decorum existed between combatants, even with the German forces—including the “Red Baron”—and some conventions of warfare were upheld; mechanical failures and weapon malfunctions weren’t unusual occurrences. His life changes when he meets "Lucienne" (Jennifer Decker) in a questionable establishment, develops feelings for her, and then has to embark on a risky rescue operation that defies his commanding officer "Thenault" (Jean Reno). The outcome? She is wounded, and he receives an award! However, she needs to be moved to a secure medical facility, and he’s tasked with leading a bombing mission—will they ever reunite? Will their affection last? Does anyone truly care? The filmmakers seemed quite fond of James Franco, and his presence does lend some appeal to the film. Beyond that, though, the performances – particularly Reno's – feel rather lifeless; there’s an excess of spoken lines, and the aerial sequences are clumsily combined with unconvincing CGI effects leading to a lackluster final scene. It might have been improved if they had incorporated actual aircraft and chosen a more compelling musical score. As it stands, the film feels overly lengthy and slow-moving.
