A scientist (David Hedison) develops a groundbreaking teleportation invention, but it brings about terrible consequences. Patricia Owens portrays his devoted wife, Vincent Price takes on the role of his brother, and Herbert Marshall appears as an inspector. "The Fly" from 1958 is a quintessential science fiction/horror film of the 1950s, spawning two black-and-white sequels in 1959 and 1965, along with two updates in the 1980s—namely, 1986 and 1989. It’s important to note that this version is presented in color; some people mistakenly believe it was filmed in black-and-white. While there are certainly elements that feel like products of their time, I personally find it more impactful than the graphic remake from 1986. The tension steadily increases toward a truly shocking conclusion, which has become legendary. Those who pay attention will also discover some genuinely touching moments between the characters. The movie’s length is 1 hour and 34 minutes, and filming occurred at Fox Studios in Century City, Los Angeles. One reference mentions Montréal, Québec as a location, but I haven't been able to determine which scenes, if any, were shot there. GRADE: A-/B+
