An unusual scientist working out of a warehouse lab somewhere in the Northeast (Jeff Goldblum) makes a breakthrough in teleportation technology, which immediately piques the interest of a reporter (Geena Davis). Things proceed smoothly until he makes the mistake of testing his invention on himself, and a fly gets caught along for the ride. John Getz appears as the woman's editor, while Joy Boushel has a brief but memorable part as Tawny. "The Fly" from 1986 has gained a following, likely due to director/writer David Cronenberg, but I didn’t find it worked quite as well as the original 1958 version starring Vincent Price. Even with its impressive special effects for the time, it wasn't as gripping or frightening (particularly that concluding scene in the earlier film). The limited settings also detract from the experience; aside from a really good bar sequence, the entire story unfolds within either a dilapidated laboratory or an upscale office building. The main actors are notably tall. While Goldblum, at 6’4½”, does his best and is adequate, he doesn't quite come across as leading man material, though he functions well in supporting roles. I've never been particularly fond of Davis, but she's perfectly acceptable; thankfully, the two of them seem believable together both physically and emotionally. The film’s strength lies in its exploration of aging and illness gradually taking over the body—it serves as a metaphor for that process. Despite the disturbing imagery, it manages to be genuinely sad and tragic, which isn’t something you always anticipate from a science fiction movie about someone transforming into an insect. It steers clear of becoming overly silly or sentimental. The film's length is 1 hour, 36 minutes, and filming took place in Toronto with studio work completed in Kleinburg, Ontario. GRADE: B-/C+
