An agent for the Department of Public Safety—played by Richard Gere—is being pushed into retirement due to his extreme methods, but he’s determined to locate a recently kidnapped young woman in the remote areas around Albuquerque while training his replacement, portrayed by Claire Danes. "The Flock," released in 2007, is a psychological crime drama and thriller that deals with disturbing sexual offenders, reminiscent of films like "Hardcore," “Se7en,” “Kiss the Girls,” “8MM,” “The General’s Daughter” and “The Cell.” It combines the dynamic of an inexperienced partner alongside a veteran, similar to what's seen in Eastwood’s “The Enforcer,” with the dark atmosphere found in his “Tightrope.” The film explores some interesting ideas about human nature, like: if you focus on something negative for too long it can start to affect you. Basically, when you hunt monsters, be careful not to become one yourself. It also raises the question of whether someone who’s so opposed to sexual predators can truly condemn them if they haven't dealt with their own shortcomings. People often try to excuse their mistakes by pointing out what others have done wrong; it’s a common and usually unconscious reaction. Ultimately, this film examines justification: Is Babbage (Gere) genuinely angry? Or is he simply acting out his own issues under the guise of his job? Richard Gere delivers an excellent performance as Babbage; we could certainly use more law enforcement agents who are so dedicated to stopping predators. Like in “The Enforcer,” there’s a palpable sense of connection developing between the experienced investigator and the newcomer, even though they aren't traditional police detectives—they’re detectives nonetheless. KaDee Strickland (as Viola), Avril Lavigne (Beatrice) and Cyd Schulte also appear, with Schulte having a memorable but uncredited role (you’ll know it when you see it, haha). The film has a bleak feel that suits the subject matter and the desolate Southwest landscape. There's some uncertainty in the final act. The filmmakers trust viewers to assemble the details themselves. It’s better than “Kiss the Girls,” which felt forced and unrealistic, and comparable to "Tightrope," though not as captivating as the other films mentioned. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 36 minutes and was filmed in New Mexico, specifically Albuquerque and nearby Bernalillo, about ten miles north. GRADE: B- (6.5/10)
