This is an interesting exploration by Léa Mysius in The Five Devils. It brought to mind Kubrick’s horror film, The Shining, for me. Both center on a child character who possesses a special ability—what's referred to as "the Shining"—allowing them to perceive things others cannot. What connects the two seems to be that this ability functions as an illustration of how often adults fail to appreciate a child’s perception and awareness. Mysius employs magical realism to convey her ideas, which is quite delightful and captivating. The execution is excellent and deserving of praise; however, I did notice some minor issues with the writing that prevented me from being completely absorbed in the experience.
