"The First Omen" delivers a genuinely unsettling horror experience that respects the 1976 movie it builds upon, while still managing to feel original and disturbing. The film succeeds in creating an environment of palpable dread, punctuated by unnerving scenes and skillful narrative choices that keep audiences uneasy. Arkasha Stevenson’s first time directing is noteworthy, demonstrating a sure hand with both visuals and plot development, and Nell Tiger Free provides a truly memorable performance. Some might find the movie's measured rhythm frustrating, and the conclusion which connects to the earlier film feels somewhat dubious, but ultimately it excels at crafting an eerie mood and providing scares that feel earned rather than manufactured.
