The initial music by Jerry Goldsmith suggests right away that there’s something entertaining coming up involving trains! That feeling is reinforced when Michael Elphick throws a would-be thief from a fast train down an embankment, where he ends up at the feet of "Pierce" – Sean Connery. This gentleman, with his bowler hat, seems like he belongs in the Reform Club, just as Phileas Fogg did at the beginning of "Around the World in Eighty Days," and he fits right into another exclusive club where a bank manager is boasting about their supposedly secure shipment of gold intended to pay the soldiers fighting in Crimea. It's not exactly a display of national pride, but "Pierce" notices this gold and, with the assistance of his girlfriend "Miriam" (Lesley-Anne Down) and safecracker "Agar" (Donald Sutherland), decides to attempt what seems impossible: stealing a ton of gold from a moving train. Because each key to the safe is held in a different location, they have to rely on cleverness and ingenuity to locate them, make copies, and return them all without raising any suspicion! It’s this string of incidents that makes for an enjoyable viewing experience while also exposing the hypocrisy of Victorian high society. Do they succeed in their plan? This is one of those films with a likeable cast that leaves you rooting for them. There's plenty of playful activity, some skillful theft, and even quite remarkable acrobatics from Wayne Sleep. A special mention should go to Sutherland though – what was the story with him and the cat in the coffin?
