John Chard on The Far Country

8/10 · Mar 18, 2019

A question hangs in the air: what does Mr. Gannon desire? This is a clever Western from a director who stood among the best working in that style. Like many other films by Anthony Mann, The Far Country combines a strong narrative with a skillful use of impressive landscapes. These elements are interwoven with familiar themes from Mann’s work—honor, integrity, betrayal, and naturally, death. The plot follows Jeff Webster (James Stewart) and Ben Tatum (Walter Brennan), business partners seeking their fortune, as they drive a herd of cattle to Oregon Territory. Hoping to capitalize on the burgeoning gold rush, they intend to sell the cattle in a Klondike town for a substantial sum. Upon arriving in Skagway, they encounter Mr. Gannon (John McIntire), who is prepared to deliver justice to Webster due to his past infractions—though these were committed with good intentions. As punishment, Gannon confiscates the partners’ herd, but they retrieve it and cross into Canada toward Dawson, where Gannon and his men pursue them. The story then unfolds in a town lacking lawfulness and populated by attractive women, shaping the fates of everyone involved. The film is consistently engaging, largely thanks to James Stewart's portrayal of an understated hero and Mann’s assured direction of Borden Chase’s screenplay. William H. Daniels’ cinematography is exceptional, although it isn't well-served by current DVD releases. The movie offers unexpected moments and a central question—will he or won't he?—that keeps the audience invested. It proves rewarding to revisit for experienced fans of the genre, but also remains an important introduction to the rich, albeit somber, Western world created by Anthony Mann and James Stewart. 8/10
