It’s genuinely delightful to witness this portrayal of various Arabian Nights-inspired episodes, introducing "Roy" (Lee Pace) in a Los Angeles hospital during the 1920s. Formerly a movie stuntman, an accident has left him unable to walk, and given the limitations of medical care at the time, he's largely confined to his bed. Also present in the hospital is the young "Alexandria" (Catinca Untaru), recovering from a broken arm and needing some cheering up. Drawing on a rich and diverse imagination, he starts sharing elaborate stories with her about bandits and slaves attempting to overcome “Odious,” who seems to represent ultimate evil. She becomes captivated as the "Black Bandit" seeks revenge for the death of his "Blue" brother, teaming up with the equally upset "Luigi" (Robin Smith), who proves surprisingly adept at causing explosions! Soon enough, a number of people are set on bringing this unpleasant character to justice. There's a reason behind his storytelling, however. She’s responsible for obtaining certain medicines for him that he can’t get from the hospital staff. When we learn what those medications are, we start to understand that "Roy" has a more sinister purpose of his own. The central question becomes whether his tales will forge a connection with the young girl that might lead him away from his plans. It's thoroughly entertaining, packed with action across its two-hour runtime, which passes quickly. Daniel Caltagirone’s portrayal of the villain brought to mind the sergeant from the original "Zorro" television series – intimidating yet almost paternal, and with plenty of swordplay, explosions, and intriguing mystery, it’s easy for viewers to become absorbed in his narratives just as much as Alexandria does—and Miss Untaru delivers a wonderful performance, conveying excitement, wonder, and eventually something more touching. The musical score is upbeat, the dialogue often quite humorous, and the chaptered storytelling format works effectively. It's geared towards adults; that’s apparent from the outset, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
