Body Snatchers felt like a fabrication... Herrington High School seemed like any other school until the teachers began acting oddly. It turns out there’s an extraterrestrial scheme to control the planet, and it's up to a group of students to stop it! Considering Robert Rodriguez is directing and Kevin Williamson wrote it, what kind of movie should you anticipate? The answer is The Faculty, which isn’t likely to surprise anyone familiar with the people behind From Dusk Till Dawn & Scream. That doesn't mean it’s not an enjoyable horror/sci-fi film; it really is, but it’s also exactly what you’d expect given who made it and the kind of movie it is. The film has been accurately described as a combination of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and typical teen high school movies (Invaders From Mars could be added to that list too), and this was done on purpose, something noticeable from the start because the students reference "Snatchers" and other films, and one of them, Stokely (Clea Duval), is into science fiction. As things unfold, it becomes clear that the filmmakers are movie buffs creating a film for people who love movies, though aimed primarily at teenagers. There's plenty of satire and familiar tropes, but this works because there’s no attempt to hide anything. The movie includes gore and some very effective scenes with blood, slugs, heads, and an eyeball, while fans of slasher films will find a couple of – seemingly unnecessary given the aliens' goals – memorable moments. The young actors, intentionally portraying stereotypes, do what they need to do, with Josh Hartnett, Duval & Elijah Wood standing out. However, The Faculty really finds its humorous energy with the adult cast. Robert Patrick, Famke Jansen, Salma Hayek, Piper Laurie, Bebe Neuwirth and even Jon Stewart all participate in some alien parasitic fun. By the time you get to the predictable reveal of the alien queen and the final confrontation, it’s hard not to feel that the film could have been better. It's certainly too derivative at times, with a bit of focus lost amidst the self-aware genre references. But ultimately, this is an enjoyable, unserious movie—perfect for cracking open a beer and enjoying it for what it is: entertaining sci-fi alien invasion nonsense. 7/10
