Peter Lorre portrays "Janos," a sincere and eager watchmaker who has recently come to New York from Europe with the goal of establishing himself and reuniting with his sweetheart, “Marie.” He finds assistance from a good-natured police officer, “O’Hara” (Don Beddoe), who suggests a place for him to stay. Unfortunately, misfortune intervenes when another resident is engaged in illegal activities, leaving "Janos" scarred and unable to secure employment. It's at this point that he meets "Dinky" (George E. Stone) and they begin devising a scheme to gather funds for facial reconstructive surgery—a path into minor offenses quickly unfolds. Things proceed with unexpected ease for him and his partners until he accidentally collides with “Helen” (Evelyn Keyes), a blind woman who is oblivious to his disfigurement and the prejudices of others. Discovering that he must wait fifteen years before corrective surgery might potentially be successful, he resolves to abandon his criminal lifestyle and move to a peaceful rural home with "Helen." His former associates are not pleased with this decision, leading up to an ultimately deceptive conclusion that functions quite well. The film's production values are somewhat simple, but it’s not particularly important—the narrative and Lorre’s performance are both strong and captivating. It isn’t a commonly viewed film anymore, but it is genuinely deserving of your time.
