"The Fabulous Baker Boys" feels like a wandering exploration of the imperfections within Jack and Frank’s lives, prompted by their attempt to revitalize their tired performance routine with the addition of a captivating vocalist. The movie portrays the subdued hopelessness inherent in the Bakers' consistently modest careers as they travel through an endless string of obscure and unremarkable locations. They find themselves stuck in these circumstances, and much like many people, have come to believe they are succeeding in a demanding field that provides little recognition. However, their perception is ultimately self-deception—a way of maintaining the illusion that they are more accomplished than they truly are, because confronting reality and acknowledging that time has moved on can be too difficult to bear.
